About Tishomingo National Forest

Tishomingo National Forest, located in northeastern Mississippi, spans across parts of Tishomingo, Prentiss, and Itawamba counties. Established in 1959, it covers a landscape marked by rolling hills, rock outcrops, waterfalls, and clean streams, setting it apart from the typically flat terrain of the surrounding region. The forest forms part of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and features unique geology with limestone bluffs and huge boulder fields. This area supports a rich variety of flora and fauna including mixed hardwood forests, pine stands, and rare plant communities found on its rocky slopes. Historically, the forest was home to the Chickasaw Nation before it became federal land; today, it preserves this cultural heritage along with natural resources. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Tishomingo for its extensive hiking and biking trails, rock climbing areas such as Bear Creek and the famed Pinhoti Trail that intersects the forest. The forest also has excellent fishing opportunities in its pristine streams, as well as camping facilities and scenic drives that showcase its rugged landscapes. Waterfalls like Bear Creek Falls and natural attractions including Bogue Chitto Creek enhance visitor experiences year-round, while the quiet, less crowded nature of the forest appeals to visitors seeking a peaceful retreat. Tishomingo is also a valuable habitat for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds, providing rewarding wildlife viewing. The forest represents a distinctive and often overlooked outdoor destination in Mississippi’s protected lands.
